Soup Showdown

After a week-long break from school and blogging, I'm back!

To begin the week I took comfort by staying on campus and eating lunch at The Riverview Dining Room. The Dining Room is an all-you-can-eat buffet for $5.99 and is open for lunch Monday-Friday 11 am - 2:30 pm.

As usual, The Dining Room was serving two types of soup. On Monday it was Old Fashioned Chicken Noodle Soup (pictured top) versus Vegetarian Lentil and Spinach Soup (pictured bottom).

The Chicken Noodle Soup seemed to be a lot more popular than the Lentil and Spinach. When I served myself at 12:30 pm almost all of the Chicken Noodle Soup was gone, while the later hardly had any skimmed off the top.

However, I preferred the Lentil Soup. It was different than what The Dining Room normally serves. Most of the time they serve Chicken or Turkey soup and I liked to see something new.

The Chicken Noodle Soup had a strange taste to it. It had the same taste as The Dining Room's Roast Turkey soup. The entire soup has an overbearing roast meat flavor, which actually might be good, if it tasted authentic. Basically, it tastes like someone put in too much artificial flavor. For this reason, the Vegetarian Lentil and Spinach Soup wins.

  1. I must say I have never eaten at the dining area on campus. Do you live on campus or are you a commuter? It seems the prices are slightly high, especially if you are simply eating food that has "too much artificial flavor." That's just an opinion from someone who has never been fond of cafeteria food though.

Why was it you liked the lentil soup so much, aside from the fact that it didn't taste fake? I would immediately be drawn to the chicken noodle soup simply because I'm familiar with that soup. Maybe that's why so many students opted for that soup.

  2. I have never eaten at the dining area on campus either, Lorry. I also agree with you that the prices seem kind of high. I have heard from many people who do eat there that the prices are high, especially considering it is on a college campus and many college students don't exactly have tons of money.

  3. In response, I also agree with your point that it is a college campus and as such, they shouldn't be charging "an arm and a leg" for something as simple as soup. Sure it's great to have a buffet style, but when I attended a college in Grand Rapids (granted the price was included in tuition...unless you were a commuter) you could get a meal for two dollars...and sometimes you could even get a meal for free. The point is, people have to eat but not everyone is able to find a job nowadays...so maybe cut some slack especially for college students. Maybe offer 2 buffet styles...one that is cheaper food like spaghetti and macaroni, while the other one is a little more pricey. It's not fair to force students, those who live on campus, to pay those high prices for mediocre food.

  4. I think it is really sad that not only have I not eaten at the dining area on campus, like others have mentioned, but I didn't even know it existed. Also, knowing that soup is going to cost $6 doesn't make me any more likely to be dining there anytime soon. Witty, I know for sure that I do not have tons of money and I would be very surprised to find many people on the U of M-Flint campus who do.

  5. In defense of the Dining Room, it is all-you-can-eat for $5.99. They have a pretty decent amount of options. I did eat more than soup on this day. I also had cheese ravioli, broccoli and pizza. Most days I eat everything that they offer, which is a pretty good deal for $6, considering it costs $7 to eat at Subway for a footlong, chips and a drink. After eating at many places this semester I would say that this is the best deal in town, unless maybe you go to a chinese buffet.

  6. The Chicken Noodle soup looked like it was thick and hearty, I know that I would have preferred that for sure. But then again, I am a sucker for chicken noodle soup.
